The 6 and the 9 shall remain apart

Okay, it's a bad joke and a horribly inappropriate title, but then again, when have I been known to be politically correct...

A couple of weeks ago, Don broke the news on Idaho Radio News that KNIN will not become a part of Journal Broadcast Group:

The Federal Communications Commission turned down Banks Broadcasting’s request to declare KNIN as a “failing station.” This makes Journal Broadcast Group’s bid to buy the station and combine it with KIVI Channel 6 impossible. For that matter, it means KNIN won’t be merged into any other Boise TV station for the time being, either.
IRN provides much more detail about the FCC's decision.

So what does it mean for agency folks? In a nutshell, it is, and is going to be business as usual for now. If you're in the local media buying business, you'll still have to buy KNIN apart from other stations. If you use local television stations for broadcast production, you've still got the same number of resources available to you.

No Coffee Morning This Month

Alas, the month of November will come and go without a Coffee Morning (well, at least not one that has been scheduled through here).

Given the schedule of the past few months, this month's Coffee Morning would have fallen either this Friday or next Friday. And since there isn't anything scheduled for this week, and next week will be the day after Thanksgiving, November is just shot.

So, what should we do? Try and schedule something on a Friday morning early in December? A different day of the week? I'm all ears. Leave your thoughts and suggestions in the comments.

The Giving Season Begins

Yesterday, Joanne Taylor of Drake Cooper posted this message as a challenge on Twitter:

challenging you guys to help round up 40 turkeys! Bring a frozen turkey to Drake Cooper this Friday am and we will take them to the foodbank
Helping out the Idaho Food Bank is a worthwhile cause, so I'll bite. If you'd like to get involved, here's what you need to do:
  1. Take a frozen turkey to Drake Cooper's office, at 416 S. 8th St. in Boise on the morning of Friday, November 21st.
  2. Enjoy the coffee and donuts that they're providing as an incentive.
Their goal is 40 turkeys, but I think this crowd can do better. 50? 60? 100? Who knows. For those of you who have wanted to see the new Drake Cooper office space, here's a chance to do it.

And, for those who are outside of the Boise area, or can't make it on Friday, you can still get involved (although you'll miss out on the Friday morning treats). Just order one online by the 20th and have it delivered to them.

Leave Your Mark on the Rockies

Well, not the mountains. The awards.

The Boise Advertising Federation is looking to redesign the Rockie Awards, and they've opened up the design competition to anyone who's willing to take a swing at it.

There are a few guidelines:

  • Both Gold and Silver Rockies must be designed. On average, the BAF gives out 15 Golds and 115 Silvers each year.
  • Awards must be able to be sourced and reproduced annually with relative ease.
  • Each Rockies award given out is personalized with: agency name, client, category, year and "Idaho Advertising Federation". Please consider this in all designs.
  • Cost to produce each award must be under $20. Please consider this when recommending materials.
You can submit as many designs as you'd like, and submissions should be sent, in PDF format, to Robbin Gibson.

The deadline for submissions is December 1st.

Yes, this information originally came out in an email from the Boise Advertising Federation, but for those who may not have gotten the email or are not subscribed, it's worth repeating here.

Communication Arts Coverage for Local Work

Oliver Russell's work on the Hitchcock Building in downtown Boise is currently featured on the Communication Arts website.

The building, home of The Record Exchange, the Neurolux and The Edge, previously had a mural of assorted Alfred Hitchcock movies through the years, but now features a design based entirely on The Birds.

The mural was designed by Toby Robin, with direction from Russ Stoddard, and Fred Choate painting the mural on the building itself.

And of course there's the obligatory promotional item that comes along with this sort of news: Customers who visit The Record Exchange today (November 14th) and mention that they saw the building mural on the Communication Arts website will receive 20% off their purchase.

The Final Results: Think Pink's Concert for the Cure

For those of you who may have missed it, Think Pink's Concert for the Cure was this past Saturday. By all accounts, the concert was well attended, and a great time was had by all.

When it was all said and done, through ticket sales, sales of their signature Save the Boobs t-shirts and raffles of donated prizes, the event raised $4,000, which will be given to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

One touching moment during the concert that was passed along: "Pat Crozier and Nick Mcdowell from local band Smooth Old Fashioned High played a dedication song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, that showcased the tribute wall which was a rotating slideshow of people who have battled all types of cancer."

Credit goes to the founders of Think Pink Inc, as well as the Boise Advertising Federation, for promoting this concert as their public service project for the year.

UPDATE - The Broken Barker Benefit

I just got word from the Wirestone folks that the Broken Barker Benefit has been postponed, and will not be happening this Friday, as originally planned. It seems that there was a setback in his recovery, so they've decided to push it back.

At this point, I know that a decision will be made later this week, and as soon as I have more, you'll know as well.

Upcoming Event - The Broken Barker Benefit

Well, I'm horribly late to the game with this one, but still...

As some of you may know, Jeff Barker, a designer at Wirestone in Boise, was critically injured in a motorcycle accident caused by a suspected drunk driver trying to evade police. While the news media reported the injuries as non life-threatening, they were serious nonetheless. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Broken Scapula
  • Broken Collar Bone
  • Broken Mandible
  • Several teeth were damaged
  • 10 Broken Ribs and punctured lung
  • 3 broken vertebrae
  • Extensive abrasions and bruising
The folks at Wirestone have been organizing a benefit party to help pay expenses that were not covered by insurance, but more importantly to celebrate the fact that Jeff is alive. And as such, the Broken Barker Benefit was born.

While the details are still sketchy, the date has been confirmed: November 14th.

As soon as I know more, I'll share those details here.
